Sound familiar?

Getting help shouldn't feel harder
than the problem itself

You've been meaning to talk to someone. But something always gets in the way.

  • There's no therapist nearby — or the waitlist is months long
  • The thought of sitting in a waiting room feels too exposing
  • Your schedule doesn't fit office hours, and you can't take time off
  • You're not even sure what to say, or where to start
  • You're in a remote community where specialist support simply doesn't exist

These aren't excuses. They're real barriers — and they're exactly why online counselling exists. You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support. And you don't have to move to a city to access it.

The Therapy Project

Real counselling. Real connection.
From wherever you are.

The Therapy Project is a Queenstown-based therapeutic practice with counsellors who specialise in anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction — and who understand what life in New Zealand actually looks like. That means rural isolation, seasonal work pressures, high-octane hospitality environments, and communities where privacy matters.

Our online counselling sessions happen by secure video, at a time that suits you. You get the same depth of care you'd receive in person — without the travel, without the wait, and without the exposure of walking through a clinic door.

We don't believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. That's why we take the time to match you with the right counsellor before your first session.

How it works

Four steps from here
to your first session

We've made the process as simple as possible — and we do the matching work for you.

01

Fill in the intake form

Tell us a little about what you're looking for — your preferences, location, what's been going on. It takes about five minutes.

02

We match you

Our team reviews your form and matches you with the counsellor who's the best fit for your needs and preferences.

03

We're in touch within 48 hours

You'll hear from us within 24–48 hours to confirm your match and get your first session booked in at a time that suits you.

04

Talk. From anywhere.

Your session happens by secure video. No commute, no waiting room — just you and the right counsellor, from wherever you are.

On funding: We're registered with ACC, WINZ/MSD, and Aoeke te Rā. We also work with major EAP providers and accept Southern Cross insurance. Note your provider in the intake form and we'll handle the rest.

EAP & Insurance

Your workplace or insurance
may already cover this

Many New Zealanders have access to funded counselling through their employer's EAP programme or health insurance — and don't realise it. The Therapy Project works with all of the major EAP providers in New Zealand, as well as Southern Cross health insurance.

OCP

Occupational health and EAP services

Clearhead

Digital and in-person EAP support

Telus Health

EAP and total wellbeing services

Habit Health

EAP and workplace wellbeing

Southern Cross EAP

Employee assistance programme

Southern Cross Insurance

Health insurance — counselling cover

Not sure if you're covered? Check with your HR team or your insurer before you book. If you are covered, simply note your provider in the intake form and we'll take it from there.

Who we work with

Online counselling works especially well
if you recognise yourself here

You're in a remote area

Rural NZ, a small town, or somewhere that doesn't have local mental health services. You deserve support too.

Your schedule is unpredictable

Shift work, seasonal jobs, hospitality hours. We offer early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Privacy matters to you

In a small community, being seen walking into a clinic can feel like too much. Online removes that barrier entirely.

You've been putting this off

Anxiety, low mood, trauma, or just a persistent feeling that something isn't right. You don't have to wait until it gets worse.

You need a specialist

Our team includes specialists in addictions, trauma-focused CBT, and adolescent mental health — rare outside of cities.

You've tried before

If therapy hasn't worked in the past, it may have been the wrong fit. Our matching process exists precisely for this.

What clients say

Words from people
who've been where you are

"

I'd been avoiding getting help for two years because I didn't think it would work over video. Within three sessions I realised it was exactly what I needed. I could talk from my own space and that actually made it easier.

— Client, rural Otago

"

Working in hospitality, I couldn't get to an office during business hours. The evening appointments meant I could finally make it work. My counsellor genuinely understood the industry I was in.

— Client, Queenstown

"

I was worried it would feel clinical or awkward. It didn't. It felt like talking to someone who actually knew what they were doing — and who actually cared.

— Client, Southland

For most concerns — anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship issues — yes. Research consistently shows equivalent outcomes. Many clients find it easier to open up from their own environment, which can actually accelerate progress.

No. You can fill in the intake form right now, without a referral. If you're accessing ACC-funded counselling for a mental injury, we'll walk you through what's needed — it's simpler than it sounds.

Any smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and internet connection. You'll receive a secure session link by email before each appointment — no apps to download, no accounts to create.
