Getting help shouldn't feel harder
than the problem itself

You've been meaning to talk to someone. But something always gets in the way.

  • There's no therapist nearby — or the waitlist is months long

  • The thought of sitting in a waiting room feels too exposing

  • Your schedule doesn't fit office hours, and you can't afford to take time off

  • You're not even sure what to say, or where to start

  • You're in a remote community where specialist support simply doesn't exist

These aren't excuses. They're real barriers — and they're exactly why online counselling exists. You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support. And you don't have to move to a city to access it.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Real counselling. Real connection.
From wherever you are.

The Therapy Project is a Queenstown-based therapeutic practice with counsellors who specialise in anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction — and who understand what life in New Zealand actually looks like. That means rural isolation, seasonal work pressures, high-octane hospitality environments, and communities where privacy matters.

Our online counselling sessions happen by secure video, at a time that suits you. You get the same depth of care you'd receive in person — without the travel, without the wait, and without the exposure of walking through a clinic door.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you reach out. That's what the first session is for.

THE THERAPY PROJECT

Three steps from here to your first session

We've made this as simple as possible. Here's exactly what happens when you get in touch.

HOW IT WORKS

On funding: We're registered with ACC, WINZ/MSD, Southern Cross, and various EAP contracts. If you're unsure what support you might qualify for, just ask us when you book — we'll help you work it out.

WHO WE WORK WITH

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

"I'd been avoiding getting help for two years because I didn't think it would work over video. Within three sessions I realised it was exactly what I needed. I could talk from my own space and that actually made it easier."

— Client, rural Otago

"Working in hospitality, I couldn't get to an office during business hours. The evening appointments meant I could finally make it work. My counsellor genuinely understood the industry I was in."

— Client, Queenstown

"I was worried it would feel clinical or awkward. It didn't. It felt like talking to someone who actually knew what they were doing — and who actually cared."

— Client, Southland

WHY THE THERAPY PROJECT

COMMON QUESTIONS

Things people usually ask
before their first session

Is online counselling as effective as in-person?

1

For most concerns — anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship issues — yes. Research consistently shows equivalent outcomes. Many of our clients find it easier to open up from their own environment, which can actually accelerate progress.

What if I've never done therapy before and don't know where to start?

2

That's the most common starting point. You don't need to have a diagnosis, a crisis, or a prepared speech. In your first session, your counsellor will guide the conversation. All you need to do is show up.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

3

No. You can book directly online, right now. If you're accessing ACC-funded counselling for a mental injury, we can walk you through what's needed — it's simpler than it sounds.

Any smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and internet connection. You'll receive a secure link before your session — no apps to download, no accounts to create.

4

What technology do I need?

What if I'm not sure it's right for me?

5

Book an initial session. There's no obligation to continue, and the first conversation is about finding out if we're the right fit for you — not signing you up for anything.

What areas of New Zealand do you cover?

6

All of New Zealand. Our counsellors are based in Queenstown and Christchurch, but we work online with clients from Northland to Southland — including rural and remote communities where local support isn't available.
